Seth Bernstein (BSJ 13, MS IMC 20) is a two-time Northwestern and Medill alum with marketing and communications experience across a variety of industries, including financial services, health care, academia and Major League Baseball. He recently began a new role as a Second Vice President and Client Communications Manager at Northern Trust after managing corporate and executive social media channels for 14 months at the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Outside of work, Seth runs his own growing social media brand, @EatWithSeth, creating content that showcases local restaurants – and those he visits while traveling – on both Instagram and TikTok.
Rema Rahman has been promoted to White House editor at The Hill, where she previously served as an associate news editor. She is also an adjunct professor of journalism at American University in Washington.
Will Mendelson has begun a new role at FOX News Digital as Entertainment Editor. He’s previously worked at Esquire, the Chicago Tribune and Us Weekly.
Roth will be leading the Ohio Newsroom, becoming the first managing editor to take the editorial reins for Ohio’s largest daily statewide news collaborative. The collaborative will act as a network of public radio newsrooms, covering news deserts in the state, telling stories that would not have been otherwise told, and connecting and contextualizing coverage statewide. Roth comes to the position from WFPL News in Louisville where she oversaw health, education, Southern Indiana and environmental coverage as News Editor. She previously worked as All Things Considered host for 89.7 NPR News in Columbus, OH.
Adam Banicki was promoted to Senior Executive Producer at The Wall Street Journal where he now oversees the Current Features, Series & Explainers teams.
Mariel Turner has recently started a new position at Shondaland.com, Shonda Rhimes’ digital media website in partnership with Hearst. In her new role as Senior Culture Editor, Mariel will oversee all culture and entertainment coverage on the site, including reporting, writing, and editing film and TV features and stories. She will also host and manage Shondaland’s IGTV Pop Culture series.
A couple of weeks after getting married in San Francisco on Oct. 2, 2021, Christine started a new role at The Points Guy, a Red Ventures brand. In her new position as coordinating editor, Christine mentors writers, editors and freelancers, helping them better organize their travel stories, hone their unique perspectives as travelers, craft well-rounded story pitches and more.
A Wall Street Journal reporting team with Medill alumni Deepa Seetharaman (BSJ08) and Emily Glazer (BSJ10) won a 2021 George Polk Award for Business Reporting for their series “Facebook Files.”
Long Island University gave further insight into the selection:
“Reporter Jeff Horwitz and the staff of the Wall Street Journal have won the Business Reporting award for “Facebook Files,” an explosive series documenting how Facebook (now Meta) ignored internal findings that company practices promoted anger, divisiveness and extremism; protected drug cartels, human traffickers and dictators; and endangered teenage girls susceptible to body-image concerns, anxiety and depression. Files Horwitz obtained from a whistleblower demonstrated that top executives rejected fixes they feared might reduce profitability or create political friction.”
Jenna Bourne won the 2021 Suncoast Regional Emmy Award for Reporter – Talent – Investigative. Jenna is an investigative reporter at 10 Tampa Bay, a TEGNA station and CBS-affiliate. She hosts “What’s Brewing?” — an investigative YouTube series geared toward a Gen-Z audience.
